Elevated Cellar Collection: 2016 Cru Barolos + Barbaresco 3-Bottle Set (Greater Portland delivery included*)
Elevated Cellar Collection: 2016 Cru Barolos + Barbaresco 3-Bottle Set (Greater Portland delivery included*)
It’s the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, and no one is hustling harder than small businesses. We encourage a huge wave of support for small businesses during this holiday season. The reward is immeasurable. Let’s face it; the product is usually so much better!
A set of two 2016 Cru Barolo + one 2016 Cru Barbaresco—with local delivery to your door.* The 2016 vintage for Barolo and Barbaresco was one of the best in several decades. A cooler year, a long growing season, and ideal harvest conditions allowed the prized Nebbiolo grape to gain more richness and complexities, and fully ripen its famous tannins on the vine. These refined wines will be ideal with further aging in the bottle to allow them to more fully develop, soften, and transform. We’ve included aging recommendations for each. With more cellar age and decanting, these wines will be excellent pairings for fettuccine with porcini, braised red meats, and well-matured cow or sheep cheeses (e.g., ravioli stuffed with meat, topped with extra cheese, and truffle).
Our Elevated wine collection features wines with incredible merit, complexity, long finish, balance, and distinction. Fine wines do bring a higher price tag, but we think these wines are worth every penny and then some. In many cases, we have purchased the whole lot. But, hurry—the wines we select for this level are very special, hard to find, only available in small quantities. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. Of course, if you need more of any of these wines or something completely different, we’re happy to put a custom set together for you. We've curated many incredible wines in recent weeks and can't wait to share them with you.
Included in this set
2016 Cantina del Pino, Ovello, Barbaresco
(100% Nebbiolo)
Who wouldn’t want to drink Barbaresco from the first vineyard to ever make Barbaresco?? Though Cantina Del Pino has only been producing since 1997, the Vacca family, and their vineyard, have been a part of Italian winemaking for over 100 years. Domizio Cavazzo established the vineyard in 1894, becoming one of the first winemakers to produce Nebbiolo under the commune name of Barbaresco. In 1912, the Vaccas took over the estate and have been there for four generations, becoming known for world-class wines from their historic vineyard. Ovello is one of the most famous sites in the entire Barbaresco wine-growing region. The elegance and intensity of this wine are conferred by the perfectly situated location of the vine: on the hills above the Tanaro River with S/SW exposure and limestone and sandy soil. This 2016 is emblematic of this benchmark vintage and packs tons of concentration and strength. Best 2023 - 2040. We recommend decanting in a wide-bottom decanter for 2+ hours if enjoying before 2027. Scores: WE 98 points, WS 96 points, WA 95 points.
2016 Michele Chiarlo, Tortoniano, Barolo
100% Nebbiolo
Tortoniano is named for the Tortonian-era soils in which the vines are planted, which contain a high percentage of magnesium and manganese. Grape clusters are thinned and harvested up to 15 days later than usual so that the fruit attains a higher concentration. The 2016 vintage will long be remembered for its rare qualitative excellence. The harvest period has seen climatic conditions that have followed the standards of the seasons, without presenting any weather anomaly, allowing the exceptionally healthy grapes to reach perfect and uniform maturation, in accordance to the usual time periods. An adequate thinning of the bunches in August has allowed the plant to channel all of its energy on fewer bunches during the last 40 days, resulting in an excellent maturation that has also enjoyed sunny days and cool nights. Best 2024–2035. We recommend decanting in a wide-bottom decanter if enjoying on the early side of this range. Scores: WE 95 points, RP 93 points.
2016 Pecchenino, Le Coste di Monforte, Barolo
100% Nebbiolo
The Pecchenino wine estate dates back to the end of the 1700's and has always been a family-run operation, with the holding handed down from father to son for generations. First produced in 2004, Le Coste is one of the few single vineyard wines from this cru available in the United States. Only four acres, this vineyard is home to vines over 20 years old that have yields below 1 kg per vine. The microclimate enjoys large amounts of calcareous marl which results in a final wine that distinguishes itself with a clean and vibrant fruit character. Best 2024-2046. Scores: JS 95 points, JD 95 points.
