Wines included in this set:
2017 Querce Seconda, Chianti Classico
100% Sangiovese
A small, organic estate in the northernmost corner of Chianti Classico, an area noted for producing wines with an alluring freshness. The estate covers 45 hectares of untouched forests, olive orchards, and naturally farmed vineyards. Niccolo Bernabei is the second generation of his winemaking family, and along with his wife, Linda, they are devoted to using only Sangiovese in their wines. The couple put a lot of effort into maintaining their soils in order to make sure the vines express the terroir of the area. These vines are 50 years old, farmed organically, and hand-harvested. The wine is fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel, then aged for 12 moths in a combination of 500-liter barrels and 10-year-old, 2000-liter French oak tonneau. This classic Chianti shows incredible depth of flavor, structure, and class, with a beautifully harmonious aroma; complex with notes of red fruit, currant, plum, spice, light balsamic, and eucalyptus. The palate reconfirms these characteristics along with a remarkable structure of integrated tannins, acidity, and a long, well-balanced finish.
2020 Montenidoli, Il Garrulo, Colli Senesi Chianti
Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Trebbiano, Malvasia
Montenidoli is literally and figuratively a mountain above the appellation of San Gimignano. It is a large estate of roughly 200 hectares, though just 24 hectares under vine. Elisabetta Fagiuoli is a pivotal figure in Tuscan winemaking, making highly appreciated terroir-driven wines for over 50 years. In 1965, she fell in love with the Montenidoli estate, which she was able to purchase with the help of some money from her grandmother. The estate, both the vineyards and olive groves were in total disrepair. She began working towards restoring the property to its former glory. We are extremely lucky to have her wines here and perhaps more than any wine in this set, it speaks to us about how something so simple and so natural can be so beautiful. We recommend 30-45 minutes in a decanter to unveil the essence of this bright, fresh, earthy, spiced red fruit, beautiful wine. Enjoy with tomato-sauced dishes!
2016 Selvapiana, Bucerchiale, Chianti Rufina Riserva
100% Sangiovese
Bucerchiale is the flagship wine of Selvapiana, crafted exclusively in exceptional vintages from the estate’s finest single vineyard. A pure expression of Sangiovese, it showcases the grape's elegance and complexity without blending components, a rarity in Chianti. The 2016 vintage was guided by Francesco Giuntini and renowned winemaker Franco Bernabei, exemplifying the vibrant acidity, firm structure, and refined balance that define Chianti Rùfina's best wines. And now, with many years of age, it is drinking so beautifully savory right now with notes of dried wild cherry, red currant, pressed violets, and hints of dried herbs, earth, and tobacco. The palate is full-bodied yet fresh, with polished tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish—a perfect match for hearty and savory Tuscan dishes like wild boar ragu and osso buco.
2019 La Kiuva, Arnad-Montjovet, Valle d'Aosta, Italy
70% Picotendro (local clone of Nebbiolo), with Gros Vien, Neyret, Cornalin, Fumin
La Kiuva (lah kee-OO-vah) is a cooperative winery with 50 grower members in the heart of the Aosta Valley, Italy, bordered by France to the west and Switzerland to the north. The Aosta Valley is renowned for its ability to deliver fresh but highly complex alpine wines. With some of the highest-lying vineyards in the world, the growers of La Kiuva are devoted to cultivating distinctive grape varieties like the local clone of Nebbiolo, known as Picotendro. La Kiuva’s growers do all their vineyard work by hand, by necessity. Their 15 hectares of vineyard slopes are so steep that they are inaccessible to tractors. Their wines are fresh and wonderfully drinkable. This wine has a light concentration of ruby. It’s delicate, intense, and complex all at the same time! Notes of fresh and savory spiced red cherries topped with balsamic and savory herbs. Notes of bright earth and mushrooms share the stage. It’s bone dry, with ample and smooth tannins, medium body, and medium-plus lifting acidity. It’s so good! It is a treat for Nebbiolo lovers and the lightest of the three Nebbiolo in this set.
2021 Daniele Conterno, Nebbiolo d'Alba, Piedmont, Italy
100% Nebbiolo
Daniele Conterno is a fourth-generation wine producer on a historic Piedmont farmhouse built in the mid-19th Century. He and his family put their heart and soul into producing uniquely elegant wines from the areas of Monforte d’Alba, Novello, and Madonna di Como, on steep terrain. The 2021 Nebbiolo d’Alba is quality in a glass. The wine has a medium-plus concertation of ruby—so clear and bright in color—with an orange-tinged rim and medium-plus aromatics. There’s harmony between ripe dark and bright red fruits—raspberries, strawberries, figs, plums, cranberry, orange zest and earthy attributes of dark earth, bark, mushrooms, and an abundance of freshly shaved truffles, and red rose petals. There’s a touch of well-integrated oak providing a spicy cinnamon and nutmeg. On the palate, it’s bone dry, with medium-plus acidity, medium plus-tannin that’s finely grained, and full-body. The ample structure is well integrated with the lush fruit, earth, floral, and barrel aging notes, providing for a long, interacting, and lasting finish.
2022 Poderi Luigi Einaudi, Nebbiolo, Langhe, Italy
100% Nebbiolo
Founded in 1897 by Luigi Einaudi—Italy’s first president—this historic estate is renowned for its dedication to crafting exceptional wines in Piedmont. With vineyards located in some of the region’s most prized areas, including Barolo and Langhe, the estate seamlessly blends tradition and innovation. Over the years, Poderi Luigi Einaudi has become synonymous with elegant, terroir-driven wines that showcase Nebbiolo’s full potential. The 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo is a superb expression of the grape’s character and Piedmont’s renowned terroir. Sourced from younger vines in Barolo and surrounding vineyards, it reflects the hallmark qualities of Nebbiolo—refinement, complexity, and structure—while being approachable in its youth. The wine opens with an alluring bouquet of ripe and lush wild cherries, red currant, and plum, joined by notes of dried leaves, rose petals, dried tarragon, and licorice. On the palate, it is bone-dry and generously full-bodied, with ample fine tannins and bright acidity that provide balance and energy.
