Wines included in this set:
2023 Steininger, Gruner Veltliner, Kamptal, Austria
100% Gruner Veltliner
We love having this food-friendly grüner on hand at all times! The 2021 vintage is delicious! It’s pale straw with tones of green and very aromatic notes of lime zest, ripe stone fruits, celery leaf, and white pepper, with abundant stony minerality. These flavors persist on the palate, joined by a structure of medium-body and high palate-cleansing acidity that give the flavors a long persistent finish. it’s a very food-friendy wine—great with young cheeses, charcuterie, seafood, chicken, and pork. Bring it with you to the family-owned BYOB casual German restaurant Schulte & Herr (Portland) and order the Schweineschnitzel. A classic pairing.
2023 Buketo, White, Macedonia, Greece
40% Malagousia 30% Assyrtiko 30% Sauvignon Blanc
Buketo is a wine created from carefully selected, organically grown grapes from the majestic Mount Pangeon in the Macedonia region of Northern Greece. A small group of farmers and winemakers create this blend together from specially selected bunches, picked like flowers, then assembled for the perfect bouquet. The 2022 vintage is mouth-wateringly delicious, zingy, and crisp white. A perfect choice when you want something bright and refreshing. It’s light straw with tones of green and lots of citrus notes—orange, key lime, and grapefruit zest with fresh-picked green pear, peach, mint, and lively minerality. Its dry and in balance with medium-body and medium-plus refreshing acidity. The finish lingers with persistent wet stone minerality. A great value wine and a beautiful blend! Try it with the Chicken Shawarma Bowl from Nura (Portland) made with spice-rubbed chicken, hummus, quinoa salad, shaved radish, endive, local greens, and garlic-yogurt sauce. Yum!
2023 Tselepos, Mantinia, Greece
100% Mantinia
From the Mantinia region on the Peloponnese Peninsula of Greece, comes a beautiful expression of the indigenous grape variety Moscofilero, and a perfect wine to sip on all year long. The nose is gorgeous with medium-plus intensity and notes of ripe apricots, peaches, nectarines, and floral qualities as well—rose hips and wildflowers, like spring in a bottle. The wine is bone dry on the palate with strong mineral character and a chalky finish. It wants to stick around on your palate and builds with flavor from the moment you sip. It’s medium-bodied with a lifting medium+ acidity that keeps it all in balance and accentuates the wines salty notes. It’s a perfect refresher. While you sip it, let it transport you to the beautiful Mediterranean place where it is from. Food pairing: Mediterranean food can be found all over Portland but if you want something a little less known, check out Olive Cafe for classic Lebanese Mezza Shawarmas. Or head to Gorham or Falmouth House of Pizza for a killer Chicken Souvlaki.
2022 Mortellito, “Viaria” Bianco, Sicily, Italy
100% Moscatella di Noto
Mortellito is in Val di Noto, in the southeast corner of Sicily that lies at the same latitudes as North Africa’s arid desert climate. Its vineyards are a few kilometers from the coast, with limestone soils, ancient olive groves and almonds trees breaking the wind off the sea. Dario and Valentina make genuine wines from indigenous grapes and friends who come to help during the different phases of the work. “This wine is like jumping into the cool salty waters of the Mediterranean after falling asleep on the beach.” Beautifully round with fresh tropical fruit, exotic spice and a salty-chalky-ocean-like minerality. It’s textured and round on the palate but also light and lifted. Only 1,000 cases made.
2021 Boundary Breaks Vineyard, Dry Riesling, Seneca Lake, New York
100% Riesling
The most misunderstood grape variety? We think so! This dry riesling is grown on Lake Seneca, the deepest of the Finger Lakes, in its own microclimate of the acclaimed wine region, where it rarely freezes and conditions for growing stay good longer than most other vineyards in the area. They are dedicated to creating the best Rieslings, Gewurztraminer, and Cabernet Franc. The #239 refers to the specific clone of Riesling that they planted for this wine. This particular clone is thought to possess a slighly more acidic characteristic which lends itself better to a drier style of Riesling. Every year, they aim to make a fruit-driven, dry Riesling that has an explosive flavor profile. This dry Riesling is a combination of punctuated fruit flavor with crisp, balancing acidity, which supplies this wine with liveliness and freshness.
2023 Domaine Pierre Duret, Quincy, Loire Valley France
100% Sauvignon Blanc
To the northwest of Bourges, the vineyards of Quincy are located on gently rolling terraces along the banks of the River Cher, covering an area of nearly 650 acres. It was one of the first Loire appellations to be granted AOC status. Domaine Pierre Duret was acquired in 1994 by Maison Joseph Mellot, a branch of the famous Sancerre dynasty and is today run by Catherine Corbeau-Mellot. The wine is 100% Sauvignon Blanc from vines that are 35-40 years old; it has a highly expressive nose combining floral and citrus elements and is fresh, fruity and balanced on the palate with a long finish. It is so good!
